About This Program
In 2007 soprano Dawn Upshaw was the first vocal artist to be awarded the MacArthur Foundation's “genius” prize, and in 2008 she was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Beyond her captivating vocal performances, she is well known for being a vigorous champion of the music of today. Composers such as John Harbison, Kaija Saariaho, John Adams and Osvaldo Golijov have written works especially for her.
Composer Shawn Jaeger’s music has been described as “introspective, mournful and evocative” by The New York Times, and often draws inspiration from Appalachian ballad singing and Old Regular Baptist hymnody. In 2010, Jaeger received a commission from Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute as part of a Professional Training Workshop led by soprano Dawn Upshaw and composer Donnacha Dennehy.
Composer Conversation Series events are FREE but reservations are required (tickets available Monday, September 23).
