About This Program

Approximate length 2:00

Artistic Director Mark Russell Smith conducts GTCYS’ premier Symphony orchestra in this lively series-opener which features Argentina Tour repertoire with two pieces that elicit the romanticism of untamed landscapes and passionate ranchers. John Williams’ cinematic score The Cowboys Overture portrays the American West, and Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera’s vibrant Malambo from the ballet Estancia captures the spirited competition of suitors vying for the heart of a young woman. The program also includes movements from Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

ABOUT GTCYS

Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies (GTCYS) broadens access to orchestral music and reaches more than 16,000 children and adults through core educational programs, free outreach activities and workshops, concerts, and special performances. It has been providing a rigorous and inspiring orchestral experience for young musicians since 1972. Led by Artistic Director Mark Russell Smith and artistic staff and coaches from The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (SPCO) and Minnesota Orchestra, GTCYS serves 900 students ages 8-18 through eight academic-year orchestras and two summer programs. GTCYS presents 25 annual concerts to more than 11,000 audience members with performances at Orchestra Hall, The Ordway, and Ted Mann Concert Hall, and free community concerts at homeless shelters, schools, and care centers across the Twin Cities. Renowned for its rich international touring history, GTCYS performed by invitation at the Granada International Festival of Music and Dance (Spain) in 2014 and will tour Argentina in June 2016. At home, GTCYS collaborates with world-class artists and organizations including guest conductors Osmo Vänskä, Roberto Abbado, and Nicholas McGegan and projects with the Minnesota Chorale. In 2011, GTCYS and the SPCO formed a strategic partnership to serve the community through music and build classical music audiences. GTCYS’ 16,000 alumni include leaders in every field who developed lifelong values of teamwork, discipline, and community engagement during their GTCYS experience. Dedicated to increasing access to music education with the help of generous donors, GTCYS awards more than $50,000 in need-based scholarships to students annually.
