Description of the concert being rehearsed:
Heralded as “one of the great Sibelians of our day,” (The Telegraph) conductor John Storgårds leads from the podium in his debut performance with the SPCO, which opens with Sibelius’s stately Pelléas and Mélisande. Baiba Skride, also making her SPCO debut with Swiss composer Frank Martin’s Violin Concerto, has been praised for playing with “panache and with a release of wonders of emotion, subtlety and virtuosity” (Ouest France). The program closes with Beethoven’s unyieldingly powerful Fifth Symphony.
