About This Program

Approximate length 2:00

We regret to inform you that yMusic will not be able to participate in this week’s scheduled performances with Shara Worden as planned. Members of yMusic were notified Monday by the Musicians’ Union (AFM – Local 802) that union regulations do not permit them to perform in this program, which takes place during an ongoing labor dispute between The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra Society and its union musicians. We understand the difficult position that these musicians are in and respect the decision they have made.

We are pleased that Shara Worden has offered to perform a 45-minute My Brightest Diamond duo set for ticket holders in place of these originally scheduled performances. Because of the change in programming, all tickets will be fully refunded. You should expect to receive a phone call from the SPCO in the coming days to process your refund. For questions about ticket refunds, feel free to contact the SPCO Ticket Office at 651.291.1144.

These performances are co-presented with the Walker Art Center.

The versatile Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond, The Decemberists) mixes elements of opera, cabaret, chamber music and rock. She shares the stage with conservatory-trained/pop-savvy yMusic – “one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music” (National Public Radio) – whose members are some of NYC’s most in-demand accompanists, with credits ranging from performances with Bon Iver to the New York Philharmonic, Jay-Z to Meredith Monk. The “rapturous” (New York Times) song cycle Penelope by Sarah Kirkland Snider—composed for Worden and chamber orchestra, newly arranged for yMusic—moves from moments of elegiac reflection to dusky, post-rock textures: “a potent melding of classical poise and alt-pop punch... the year’s most affecting creation” (Time Out New York, Best of Classical). Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, with lyrics and concept by playwright Ellen McLaughlin, this gorgeous piece of music is a mesmerizing meditation on memory, identity, and what it means to come home. The elegantly woven program will showcase excerpts of Penelope surrounded by new chamber works from My Brightest Diamond and yMusic, whose recent albums topped critics’ “best of” lists nationwide. Co-presented by the Walker Art Center, in association with Carleton College.

These concerts are SOLD OUT.

Please note: The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra does not perform on this program.

Come early! The Meritage Bar will be open in the Music Room one hour prior to, and throughout, this performance. Thank you to Meritage and Stella Artois, official sponsors of Liquid Music.
