About This Program

Approximate length 2:00

A chamber ensemble comprised of the nation’s top Black and Latinx classical string soloists, the Sphinx Virtuosi returns to Saint Paul, this time with soprano Elaine Alvarez. The performance features works by 19th century Austrian composer Franz Schubert and 20th century Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, both of whom struggled with injustice and violence in their own respective times and countries, along with contemporary works by Black British composer Philip Herbert, Venezuelan composer Aldemaro Romero, and African American composer Michael Abels, who speak to many of these same issues today.

Copresented by the Arts Partnership (The Ordway, Minnesota Opera, Schubert Club and the SPCO)

Please note: the SPCO does not perform on this program.
