Baroque Concertos and Haydn’s Fire Symphony

February 16-17, 2018

Drama abounds in this program of music with theatrical ambitions. Arvo Pärt’s stunning Fratres employs his tintinnabuli minimalist style to sonically dramatize his feeling that “the instant and eternity are struggling within us.” SPCO musicians shine as soloists in ebullient and evocative Baroque concertos from Francesco Geminiani, prolific opera composer Domenico Cimarosa and the beloved Antonio Vivaldi. Haydn’s Symphony No. 59, likely nicknamed Fire after its use as accompaniment to German playwright Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Großmann’s play The Great Fire, closes out the program.

Francesco Geminiani
Concerto Grosso in D Minor, after Corelli, La folia

Domenico Cimarosa
Concerto in G for Two Flutes

Antonio Vivaldi
Violin Concerto, Il favorito

Arvo Pärt
Fratres for Strings (adapted from the String Quartet version by Daria Adams)

Franz Joseph Haydn
Symphony No. 59, Fire
