Praised for his “accuracy and panache” (Miami Herald) and his “thunderous, ominous, and dramatic" performances (South Florida Classical Review), timpanist Alex Wadner recently completed a four year fellowship as the Timpani Fellow at the New World Symphony. He has also performed as a guest timpanist with the San Francisco Symphony, National Symphony Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra (UK), and the Malaysian Philharmonic. Alex received his Bachelors of Music in Percussion Performance from Indiana University in 2010, where he studied with John Tafoya and Gerald Carlyss. He earned his Master’s Degree in Timpani Performance with Honors under the tutelage of David Herbert and Jack Van Geem at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 2012, where he was the recipient of the Paul L. & Phyllis Wattis Foundation Scholarship Award in 2010 and 2011. Also an educator, he has given masterclasses to college students in Medellín, Colombia and Los Angeles, coached high school students in the Miami-Dade area, and served as head percussion staff for the Young Musician’s Program in Berkeley, California.
