Guest Musician

Barry Bauguess is one of North America’s most sought-after Baroque trumpet concert and recording artists. He has served as principal trumpet with Apollo’s Fire, The Portland Baroque Orchestra, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Opera Lafayette, Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra, Washington Bach Consort, American Bach Soloists, Tafelmusik, Tempesta di Mare, and the Magnolia Baroque Festival Orchestra. He has worked with many period instrument specialists including Nicholas McGegan, Christopher Hogwood, Roger Norrington, Monica Huggett, and Jordi Savall. His festival performances include the Spoleto Festival, Blossom Fesival, the Ojai Festival, Wolf Trap, and The 2000 Bach Pilgrimage throughout Germany.

Barry also frequently appears with other ensembles including Chatham Baroque and The Folger Consort, and was a member of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra for fourteen years. He is a Kulas Visiting Professor in the Historical Performance Program at Case Western Reserve University and was the Baroque trumpet teacher for the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin Conservatory. In November, Barry performed the North American premier of the Haydn Trumpet Concerto on keyed trumpet with a modern orchestra with the Sioux City Symphony.

In addition to his performances and recordings, Barry has given masterclasses and lecture/demonstrations for universities around the world including the Cleveland Institute of Music, Toho Gakuen School of Music, Florida State University, UNC School of the Arts, BYU Idaho, Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, Maryland Early Brass Festival, Historic Brass Society, and University of Northern Illinois.

Equally at home on modern trumpet, Barry is the Founding Director of both Kordax Brass and Matrix Brass Quintet and has served as Principal trumpet of The Stowe Festival Orchestra, and the Winston-Salem Symphony. He also has performed with the North Carolina Symphony, Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, and the Greensboro Symphony.

Mr. Bauguess holds a BM and MM from the UNC School of the Arts. He has recorded for Harmonia Mundi, Teldec, Koch International, Conifer Classics, Nonesuch, Sine Qua Non, PBS and NPR and has performed throughout the US, Canada, Germany, Italy, and Japan. When not physically attached to the trumpet, Barry can usually be found either in his kitchen cooking with his wife, Baroque Dance Soloist Paige Whitley-Bauguess or on the back roads of North Carolina racing his bicycle.
