Gary Bordner

Former SPCO Musician

Gary Bordner has been Principal Trumpet of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra since 1980 and has appeared frequently as soloist with the Chamber Orchestra, including performances of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 at New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Ravinia Festival. He is a featured soloist on SPCO recordings of Copland’s Quiet City and the Shostakovich First Piano Concerto on the Teldec label, and has also played on Minnesota Public Radio’s Saint Paul Sunday radio program. He performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood in 1998. In November 2001 and February 2002, he performed as assistant principal trumpet with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Bordner served as principal trumpet at San Diego’s Mainly Mozart Festival in the summers of 1997, 2002 – 2008 and 2010. He was a featured soloist at the Mainly Mozart Festival in June 2004. He recorded his first solo CD in super audio with Twin Cities based Artegra Records. Bordner is also on the faculty at the University of Minnesota teaching applied trumpet. He studied at Augustana College and the Eastman School of Music, where he earned his master’s degree and Eastman’s performance certificate.
