John Turman

Guest Musician

During the 2013-2014 season, John Turman performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra as acting third horn under maestro Jaap van Zweden. In addition, he has performed with the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, Austin Symphony and the Austin Lyric Opera. In 2010, Mr. Turman was named one of the Yamaha Corporation’s Young Performing Artists and in the summer of 2013, was chosen as a finalist in the Houston Symphony’s Ima Hogg International Soloist Competition. Mr. Turman is a founding member of the Noctua Wind Quintet. In 2012, the Noctua Wind Quintet was the recipient of the Coleman-Sanderson grand prize for winds at the Coleman Competition and also received the bronze medal at the Fischoff International Chamber Music Competition. The group was awarded second prize at Chamber Music Yellow Springs in 2013. Currently, Mr. Turman resides in Houston and is finishing his degree in Horn Performance at Rice University under the tutelage of Professor William VerMeulen. In his free time, Mr. Turman enjoys film making and playing jazz guitar.
