Laura Griffiths

Guest Musician

Formerly Principal Oboe of the Cleveland Orchestra, Laura Griffiths is Principal Oboe of the San Francisco Ballet and a frequent member of the San Francisco Opera orchestra. Previously, she was acting Associate Principal Oboe with the San Francisco Symphony.
After graduating from the Eastman School of Music where she was a student of Richard Killmer, she held the position of Principal Oboe of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra for nine years. In addition , She has acted as guest Principal Oboe in many major orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Saint Louis Symphony and Atlanta Symphony.

During the summer, Laura is active in different festivals, some of which have included the Mainly Mozart Festival in San Diego, the Midsummer Mozart Festival in the Bay Area, the Utah Music Festival, the Britt Festival in Oregon, and La Jolla SummerFest.
Laura has been heard as a soloist in concertos with several of the Bay Area orchestras, including the Bolcom oboe concerto with Nadja Solerno-Sonnenberg and the New Century Chamber Orchestra, the Strauss Concerto with the Palo Alto Philharmonic, and the Mozart Concerto with the Midsummer Mozart Festival.
Laura is an active chamber musician and is a co- founder of the group Strobe, which consists of solo oboe and string trio. The group performs in several different venues around the Bay Area and highlights the traditional oboe quartet repertoire while encouraging and engaging in new compositions for this instrumentation. Laura was previously on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music as a Chamber Music teacher, assistant oboe professor at the Oberlin School of Music and now teaches oboe at San Francisco State University.
