Maya Miro Johnson (b. 2001, Salt Lake City) is an aspiring conductor-composer making her professional debut this weekend. Trained in music, dance, drama and literary arts, Maya began conducting studies with Rei Hotoda at age 15 and shortly thereafter was selected as Apprentice Conductor, NYO-USA 2017, working with Marin Alsop and James Ross. As Luna Composition Lab’s 2017.18 Griselda Villanueva Fellow, Maya recently conducted a premiere at Roulette and National Sawdust. She attended the 2018 Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s Young Artist Composition Program as an ASCAP Scholar.
Maya studies conducting with Conner Gray Covington, composition with Devin Maxwell and violin with Yuki MacQueen. She is grateful to all her mentors, including Kristin Kuster, Simon Holt and Missy Mazzoli. Her creative interests include interdisciplinary collaboration, spatialization and dualities such as movement/stillness. She is currently pursuing an exploration of contemporary tap dance fusion. When not at work, Maya enjoys philosophy, film noir and cats.
