Stewart Rose

Guest Musician

Stewart Rose is one of the preeminent French Horn players of his generation. A native New Yorker, he is Principal Horn with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of St. Luke’s and was Principal Horn with the New York City Opera for 24 years. He is a frequent guest with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and has performed as soloist on numerous occasions with Orpheus and St. Luke’s in the United States, Europe and Asia.

In recent seasons he has performed as guest principal horn with other leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Saito Kinen Festival Orchestra. He has appeared at the Marlboro, Tanglewood, Mostly Mozart, Spoleto, Edinburgh, Bridgehampton and Eastern Shore festivals and with the MET Chamber Ensemble under James Levine.

His first solo CD with the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, “From the Forest”, a collection of early Classical works for horn and orchestra by Telemann, Haydn, Leopold Mozart, and Christoph Forster, was recently released to great critical acclaim and is widely available on iTunes and other digital media. Recording credits include over 100 recordings of the chamber music and orchestral literature, numerous movie soundtracks and a wide variety of collaborations with contemporary artists.

In addition to performing Stewart Rose has worked with young artists as coach, teacher and mentor at Colorado College Summer Music Festival, Montclair State University, Manhattan School of Music Preparatory Division and SUNY Purchase. He has performed master classes at the Manhattan School of Music, Western Michigan University, Colorado College and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra.
