About This Program
Approximate length 2:00
Our extremely popular Chamber Music Series kicks off with a joyful noise as SPCO musicians lead works that draw from the popular idioms of jazz, klezmer and Creole music. The influence of jazz on both Stravinsky and Poulenc in the first decades of the 20th century is heard to great effect in the first two works of the program, before we fast forward to works written in the last decade of the century. Paul Schoenfield’s thrilling and wildly virtuosic trio is inspired by the rich and varied klezmer tradition, while Marsalis’ At the Octoroon Balls draws from Creole music the composer heard growing up in New Orleans.
